Helm's Deep, named for Helm Hammerhand, was a gorge in the White Mountains located below the Thrihyrne. It lay near the Westfold, and was commonly known as the location of the Hornburg.[1] It was later made famous by the Battle of the Hornburg, a major battle of the War of the Ring.
DescriptionEdit
The gorge narrowed from the north, with the cliffs on each side heightening until its southernmost point, where the fortress of the Hornburg and the source of the Deeping-stream lay. The Hornburg was built upon a great spur of rock which extended from the gorge's northern cliff, and from the fortress to the southern cliff was built the Deeping Wall. The earthen wall known as Helm's Dike spanned the width of the gorge, acting as a first defense of the fortress.
Behind the Hornburg was located the Glittering Caves, which were renowned for their beauty.[1]
History Edit
Helm's Deep was first known to be settled by the Men of Gondor, who constructed the Hornburg during the Second Age. When Calenardhon was given by Gondor to the Éothéod during the rule of Eorl the Young, it became a stronghold of the Rohirrim.[2]
During the Long Winter of TA 2758-2759, Helm Hammerhand and a contingent of Rohirrim soldiers took shelter in the Hornburg, and from there rode to retake Edoras. It was at this time that the gorge's name was taken from Helm.[2]
In the year TA 3019, during the War of the Ring, King Théoden of Rohan led the people of Edoras to the Hornburg to take refuge from the impending attack of Saruman's army. It was then that the Battle of the Hornburg was fought, which ended in victory for Rohan after Erkenbrand and Gandalf arrived with reinforcements.[1] Following the beginning of the Fourth Age, Gimli founded a dwarven colony in the Glittering Caves, becoming Lord of the Glittering Caves for a time.[3]

Gandalf the White[edit]
- The Grey Pilgrim, that’s what they used to call me. Three hundred lives of men I’ve walked this earth and now I have no time. With luck, my search will not be in vain. Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East.
- Sauron's wrath will be terrible, his retribution swift. The battle for Helm's Deep is over. The battle for Middle Earth is about to begin. All our hopes now lie with two little hobbits, somewhere in the wilderness.
Saruman the White[edit]
- The world is changing. Who now has the strength to stand against the armies of Isengard.. and Mordor? To stand against the might of Sauron and Saruman and the union of the two towers? Together, my Lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle-Earth. The old world will burn in the fires of industry. The forests will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the Orc. We have only to remove those who oppose us.
- It will begin in Rohan. Too long have these peasants stood against you..but no more. Rohan, my lord, is ready to fall.
- [Addressing his Uruk-Hai army] A new power is rising! Its victory..is at hand! This night, the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan! March to Helm's Deep! Leave none alive! TO WAR! There will be no dawn.. for Men!
Others[edit]
The Eye of Sauron now turns to Gondor, the last free kingdom of Men. His war on this country will come swiftly. He senses the Ring is close.
- Galadriel: The power of the enemy is growing. Sauron will use his puppet Saruman to destroy the people of Rohan. Isengard has been unleashed. The Eye of Sauron now turns to Gondor, the last free kingdom of Men. His war on this country will come swiftly. He senses the Ring is close. The strength of the Ringbearer is failing. In his heart, Frodo begins to understand. The quest will claim his life. You know this. You have foreseen it. It is the risk we all took. In the gathering dark, the will of the Ring grows strong. It works hard now to find its way back into the hands of men. Men, who are so easily seduced by its power. The young captain of Gondor has but to extend his hands, take the Ring for his own and the world will fall. It is close now, so close to achieving its goal. For Sauron will have dominion of all life on this Earth, even unto the ending of the world. The time of the Elves is over. Do we leave Middle-earth to its fate? Do we let them stand alone?
- Gandalf the Grey: ..so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
- Théoden: I have not seen my niece smile for a long time. She was a girl when they brought her father back dead, cut down by Orcs. She watched her mother succumb to grief, and she was left alone to tend her king in growing fear, doomed to wait upon an old man who should have loved her as a father.
- Théoden: So it begins.
- Aragorn: Legolas, what do your Elf-eyes see?
- Sam: [to Faramir] Do you want to know what happened to Boromir? You want to know why your brother died? He tried to take the Ring from Frodo! After swearing an oath to protect him, he tried to kill him! The Ring drove your brother mad!
- Sam: It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come, and when the sun shines, it’ll shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo, I do understand, I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding on to something…. That there’s some good in the world, Mr. Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for.
- Uglúk: Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!
Dialogue[edit]
- Sam: Mordor. The one place in Middle-earth we don't want to see any closer, and the one place we're trying to get to. And just where we can't get! Let's face it, Mr. Frodo, we're lost. I don't think Gandalf meant for us to come this way.
- Frodo: He didn't mean for a lot of things to happen, Sam.. but they did.
- Gollum: [Sam has him tethered with the Elven rope] IT BURNS! IT BURNS US! It freezes! Nasty Elves twisted it. TAKE IT OFF US!
- Sam: Quiet, you! [to Frodo] It's hopeless! Every Orc in Mordor's gonna hear this racket! Let's just tie him up and leave him.
- Gollum: NO! That would kill us! Kill us! [groans and writhes on the rocks]
- Sam: It's no more than you deserve!
- Frodo: Maybe he does deserve to die. But now that I see him, I do pity him.
- Gollum: [gets up, trying to be polite] We be nice to them, if they be nice to us. Take it off us! We swears to do what you wants! We swears..
- Frodo: There's no promise you can make that I can trust.
- Gollum: We swears to serve the master of the precious. We'll swear on.. on the precious! Gollum, gollum.
- Frodo: The Ring is treacherous. I will hold you to your word.
- Gollum: Yes.. on the precious. On the precious.
- Sam: [brief silence] I DON'T BELIEVE YOU! [Gollum tries to flee, but Sam pulls him back by the rope] Get down! I said DOWN!
- Frodo: Sam!
- Sam: He's trying to trick us! If we let him go, he'll throttle us in our sleep!
- [Gollum gasps, clutching at the rope around his neck; Frodo approaches him]
- Frodo: You know the way into Mordor?
- Gollum: [afraid] Yes..
- Frodo: You've been there before?
- Gollum: Yes..
- Frodo: [removes the rope] You will lead us to the Black Gate.
- Pippin Took: Merry? Merry! Wake up. [to the Uruks] My friend is sick. He needs water. Please!
- Uglúk: Sick is he? Give him some medicine, boys!
- [The Uruks pour Orc-liquor down Merry's throat, which he coughs and spits out]
- Pippin Took: Stop it!
- Uglúk: Can't take his draught! [laughs cruelly]
- Pippin Took: Leave him alone!
- Uglúk: Why? You want some? Huh? Then keep your mouth shutt.
- Pippin Took: Merry.
- Merry Brandybuck: Hello, Pip.
- Pippin Took: You're hurt.
- Merry Brandybuck: I'm fine. It was just an act.
- Pippin Took: An act?
- Merry Brandybuck: [smiles] See? Fooled you too. Don't worry about me, Pippin.
- Legolas: Come, Gimli! We're gaining on them!
- Gimli: I'm wasted on cross-country! We dwarves are natural sprinters! Very dangerous over short distances!
- Éowyn: Your son is badly wounded, my lord. Will you not go to him? Uncle?
- Éomer: He was ambushed by Orcs. If we don't defend our country, Saruman will take it by force.
- Gríma Wormtongue: That is a lie. Saruman the White has ever been our friend and ally.
- Théoden: Gríma.. Gríma..
- Éomer: Orcs are roaming freely across our lands. Unchecked, unchallenged, killing at will. Orcs bearing the White Hand of Saruman. [tosses an Orc helmet at Théoden's feet]
- Gríma Wormtongue: Why do you lay these troubles on an already troubled mind? Can you not see your uncle is wearied by your malcontent? Your warmongering?
- Éomer: Warmongering? [grabs Gríma by the throat] How long is it since Saruman bought you? What was the promised price, Gríma? When all the Men are dead, you'll take your share of the treasure? [Gríma glances at Éowyn as she leaves the room] Too long have you watched my sister! Too long have you haunted her steps!
- [Guards seize Éomer from behind, forcing him to release Gríma]
- Gríma Wormtongue: You see much, Éomer, son of Éomund. Too much. [guards begin to drag Éomer out] You are here forth banished from the Kingdom of Rohan and all its domains, under pain of death.
- Éomer: You have no authority here! Your orders mean nothing!
- Gríma Wormtongue: This order does not come from me. It comes from the King. [holds up a decree bearing Théoden's signature and seal] He signed it this morning.
- Orc Captain: I'm starving! We ain't had nothing but maggoty bread for three stinking days!
- Snaga: Yeah! Why can't we have some meat? [staring at Merry and Pippin] What about them? They're fresh!
- Uglúk: They are not for eating!
- Grishnákh: What about their legs? They don't need those. Ooh, they look tasty..!
- Uglúk: [pushing Grishnákh away] Get back, scum! The prisoners go to Saruman, alive and unspoiled!
- Grishnákh: Alive? Why alive? Do they give good sport?! [gnashes teeth]
- Uglúk: They have something. An Elvish weapon. The Master wants it for the War.
- Pippin Took: [whispering to Merry] They think we have the Ring.
- Merry Brandybuck: Shh! As soon as they find out we don't, we're dead.
- Snaga: [approaching the Hobbits with a blade] Carve them up! Just a mouthful! A bit off the flank!
- Uglúk: No!
- [with one swing of his own blade, Uglúk cuts off Snaga's head, and his body collapses onto the ground]
- Uglúk: Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!
- [The Orcs and Uruks proceed to devour Snaga's body]
- Éomer: What business does an Elf, a Man, and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark? Speak quickly!
- Gimli: Give me your name, Horse-master, and I shall give you mine.
- Éomer: [dismounts horse] I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground.
- Legolas: [quickly draws his bow] You would die before your stroke fell!
- [Rohirrim point spears at Legolas, Aragorn signals for Legolas to bring down his weapon]
- Aragorn: I am Aragorn, son of Arathorn. This is Gimli, son of Glóin, and Legolas of the Woodland Realm. We are friends of Rohan, and of Théoden, your King.
- Éomer: Théoden no longer recognizes friend from foe. Not even his own kin. [removes helmet] Saruman has poisoned the mind of the king and claimed lordship over these lands. My company are those loyal to Rohan, and for that we are banished. The White Wizard is cunning. He walks here and there they say, as an old man hooded and cloaked. And everywhere his spies slip past our nets.
- Aragorn: We are no spies. We track a party of Uruk-Hai, Westward across the plain. They have taken two of our friends captive.
- Éomer: The Uruks are destroyed. We slaughtered them during the night.
- Gimli: But there were two Hobbits! Did you see two Hobbits with 'em?
- Aragorn: They would be small. Only children to your eyes.
- Éomer: We left none alive. We piled the carcasses and burned them.
- Gimli: Dead?
- Éomer: I am sorry. [whistles] Hasufel! Arod! [two riderless horses approach] May these horses bear you to better fortune than their former masters. Farewell. Look for your friends. But do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands. [to the other Rohirrim] We ride North!
- Treebeard: Little Orcs! Bru-ra-hoom!
- Pippin Took: It's talking, Merry! The tree is talking!
- Treebeard: Tree?! I am no tree! I am an Ent.
- Merry Brandybuck: A tree-herder. A shepherd of the forest!
- Pippin Took: Don't talk to it, Merry! Don't encourage it!
- Treebeard: Treebeard, some call me.
- Pippin Took: And, whose side are you on?
- Treebeard: Side? I am on nobody's side, because nobody is on my side, little Orc. Nobody cares for the woods anymore.
- Merry Brandybuck: We're not Orcs! We're Hobbits!
- Treebeard: Hobbits? Mmm.. never heard of a Hobbit before. Sounds like Orc mischief to me! They come with fire, they come with axes! Gnawing, biting, breaking, hacking, burning! Destroyers and usurpers, curse them!
- Merry Brandybuck: No! You don't understand! We're Hobbits! Halflings! Shire-folk!
- Treebeard: Maybe you are, and maybe you aren't. The White Wizard will know.
- Sam: It's a bog! He's lead us into a swamp!
- Gollum: Swamp, yes. Yes. Come master, we will take you on safe path through the mist. I found it, I did. A way through the mashes. Orcs don't use it. Orcs don't know it. They go around, for miles and miles! Come quickly. Soft and swift as shadows, we must be.
- Sam: There are dead things. Dead faces in the water!
- Gollum: All dead. All rotten. Elves, and Men, and Orcses. A great battle long ago.. The Dead Marshes. Yes, yes, that is their name! This way. Don't follow the lights. [Sam slips and almost ends up in the water] Careful now! Or Hobbits go down to join the Dead Ones, and light little candles of their own.
- Gollum: [to himself] So bright.. so beautiful.. my precious..
- Frodo: What did you say?
- Gollum: Master should be resting. Master needs to keep up his strength.
- Frodo: Who are you?
- Gollum: Mustn't ask us, not its business. Gollum, gollum.
- Frodo: Gandalf told me you were one of the River-folk.
- Gollum: [ignoring him] Cold be heart and hand and bone. Cold be travelers far from home.
- Frodo: He said your life was a sad story.
- Gollum: They do not see what lies ahead, when Sun has faded and Moon is dead!
- Frodo: You were not so very different from a Hobbit once, were you.. Sméagol?
- Gollum: What.. what did you call me?
- Frodo: That was your name once, wasn't it? A long time ago.
- Gollum: My name? My name.. [smiles] Sméagol.
- [Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are tracking Merry and Pippin through Fangorn Forest]
- Aragorn: These are strange tracks.
- Gimli: The air is so close in here!
- Legolas: This forest is old. Very old.. full of memory.. and anger.
- [the trees groan, Gimli holds up his axe]
- Legolas: The trees are speaking to each other.
- Aragorn: [whispers loudly] Gimli! Lower your axe.
- Legolas: They have feelings, my friend. [Gimli lowers his axe] The Elves began it. Waking up the trees, teaching them to speak.
- Gimli: Talking trees? What do trees have to talk about, hm? Except the consistency of squirrel droppings.
- Legolas: [in Elvish] Aragorn, something's out there.
- Aragorn: [in Elvish] What do you see?
- Legolas: [in common tongue] The White Wizard approaches.
- Aragorn: Do not let him speak. He will put a spell on us. [Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli ready their weapons] We must be quick.
- [They turn to confront the White Wizard, who appears before them enveloped in a blinding light. Gimli hurls his axe, and Legolas shoots an arrow, which the White Wizard deflects with his staff. Aragorn holds up his sword, which burns hot in his hand, forcing him to drop it]
- White Wizard: You are tracking the footsteps of two young Hobbits.
- Aragorn: Where are they?
- White Wizard: They passed this way, the day before yesterday. They met someone they did not expect. Does that comfort you?
- Aragorn: Who are you? Show yourself! [the White Wizard reveals himself to be Gandalf] It cannot be!
- Legolas: Forgive me. I mistook you for Saruman.
- Gandalf: I am Saruman. Or rather, Saruman as he should have been.
- Aragorn: You fell.
- Gandalf: Through fire and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me. And I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead and everyday was as long as a life-age of the earth. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done.
- Aragorn: Gandalf..
- Gandalf: Gandalf? Yes.. that's what they used to call me. Gandalf the Grey. That was my name.
- Gimli: [surprised] Gandalf!
- Gandalf: I am Gandalf the White. And I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide. One stage of your journey is over, another begins. War has come to Rohan. We must ride to Edoras with all speed.
- [Extended Edition only, Gimli is getting desperately worried about the fates of Merry and Pippin]
- Gimli: Are we going to leave those poor little Hobbits here in this horrid, dark, dank, tree-infested–! [reacts to the sound of the trees] I mean..charming, quite charming, forest?
- Gandalf: It was more than mere chance that brought Merry and Pippin to Fangorn. A great power has been sleeping here for many long years. The coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains.
- Aragorn: And one thing you have not changed, my friend.
- Gandalf: Hmm?
- Aragorn: You still speak in riddles.
- Gandalf: A thing is about to happen that has not happened since the elder days. The Ents are going to wake up..and find that they are strong.
- Gimli: Strong?! Oh, that's good.
- Gandalf: So stop your fretting, Master Dwarf! Merry and Pippin are quite safe! In fact, they are far safer than you are about to be!
- Gimli: [to himself] This new Gandalf's more grumpy than the old one.
- Frodo Baggins: [about to enter the Black Gate] I do not ask you to come with me, Sam.
- Samwise Gamgee: I know, Mr. Frodo. I doubt even these Elvish cloaks will hide us in there.
- Frodo Baggins: Now!
- [Frodo and Sam lunge forward to make a run for the Black Gate, but Sméagol grabs them and pulls them back]
- Sméagol: NO! No, Master! They catch you! They catch you! Don't take it to him! He wants the precious! Always, he is looking for it! And the precious is wanting to go back to him. But we mustn't let him have it.
- [An Orc horn sounds in the distance, and the Black Gate begins to close. Frodo tries again to run toward it, but Sméagol grabs his arm, holding him back.]
- Sméagol: No! There's another way. More secret, a dark way.
- Samwise Gamgee: Why haven't you spoken of this before?!
- Sméagol: Because Master did not ask.
- Samwise Gamgee: [to Frodo] He's up to something!
- Frodo Baggins: Are you saying there's another way into Mordor?
- Sméagol: Yes. There's a path, and some stairs, and then.. a tunnel.
- Frodo Baggins: [after a brief pause] He's led us this far, Sam.
- Samwise Gamgee: Mr. Frodo, no.
- Frodo Baggins: He's been true to his word.
- Samwise Gamgee: No.
- Frodo Baggins: Lead the way, Sméagol.
- Sméagol: Good Sméagol always helps.
- [Extended Edition only, Pippin is drinking water from a spring in Fangorn Forest]
- Pippin Took: I had the loveliest dream last night. There was this large barrel full of pipe-weed. And we smoked all of it. And then.. you were sick. I'd give anything for a whiff of Old Toby.
- Merry Brandybuck: [hearing a tree moan] Did you hear that? [hearing it again] There it is again! Something's not right here, not right at all. [Pippin stands up and groans, sounding much like a moaning tree] You just said something..treeish!
- Pippin Took: No, I didn't, I was just stretching. [he 'groans' again, growing slightly]
- Merry Brandybuck: You're taller!
- Pippin Took: Who?
- Merry Brandybuck: You!
- Pippin Took: Than what?
- Merry Brandybuck: Than me!
- Pippin Took: I've always been taller than you!
- Merry Brandybuck: Pippin, everyone knows, I'm the tall one, you're the short one.
- Pippin Took: Please, Merry. You're, what, three foot six? At the most? Whereas me, I'm pushing three-seven. [groans and grows more noticeably] Three-eight! [drinks more water]
- Merry Brandybuck: Three foot eight? [realizing] You did something.
- [Pippin smiles innocently and places the bowl of forest water down. Merry, realizing the water is making Pippin taller, steals a pot and drinks some himself]
- Treebeard: The trees have grown wild and dangerous. Anger festers in their hearts. Black are their thoughts. Strong is their hate. They will harm you if they can. There are too few of us now. Too few of us Ents left to manage them.
- Pippin Took: Why are there so few of you, when you've lived so long? Are there Ent children?
- Treebeard: Bru-ra-hoom. There have been no Entings for a terrible long count of years.
- Merry Brandybuck: Why is that?
- Treebeard: We lost the Entwives.
- Pippin Took: Oh, I'm sorry. How did they die?
- Treebeard: Die? No. We lost them, and now we cannot find them. I don't suppose you've seen Entwives in the Shire?
- Merry Brandybuck: Can't say that I have. You, Pip?
- Pippin Took: What do they look like?
- Treebeard: I don't remember now.
- Gríma Wormtongue: [finds Éowyn crying over Théodred's body] Oh, he.. he must have died sometime in the night. What a tragedy for the king to lose his only son and heir. I understand his passing is hard to accept, especially now that your brother has deserted you.
- Éowyn: Leave me alone, snake!
- Gríma Wormtongue: Oh, but you are alone! Who knows what you've spoken to the darkness? In bitter watches of the night, when all your life seems to shrink, the walls of your bower closing in about you, like a hutch to trammel some wild thing in! [putting a hand to her cheek] So fair, so cold, like a morning of pale spring still clinging to winter's chill..
- Éowyn: Your words are poison! [pulls away and leaves]
- Gríma Wormtongue: My Lord, Gandalf the Grey is coming. He is a herald of woe.
- Gandalf: The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late, Théoden King.
- Gríma Wormtongue: He is not welcome here.
- Théoden: [weakly] Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?
- Gríma Wormtongue: A just question, my liege. Late is the hour in which this conjurer chooses to appear! Láthspell I name him. Ill news is an ill guest.
- Gandalf: Be silent! Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth! I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm. [points his staff at Grima]
- Gríma Wormtongue: [Terrified] The staff! [To guards] I TOLD YOU TO TAKE THE WIZARD'S STAFF!
- [The guards attempt to restrain the group, and a fight breaks out; Gandalf approaches Théoden]
- Gandalf: Théoden! Son of Thengel! Too long have you sat in the shadows.
- Gimli: [pinning down Gríma] I would stay still if I were you!
- Gandalf: [to Théoden] Harken to me! I release you from this spell.. [Attempts to remove Saruman's influence, seemingly to no avail]
- Théoden: [laughs cruelly] You have no power here, Gandalf the Grey! [Continues to laugh]
- Gandalf the White: [removes his grey cloak, stunning Théoden with the white robe beneath] I will draw you, Saruman, as poison is drawn from a wound! [Casts a spell, knocking Théoden]
- Aragorn: [stops Éowyn from rushing to Théoden's side] Wait.
- Saruman: [Speaking through Théoden] If I go..Théoden dies!
- Gandalf the White: [Casts another spell] You did not kill me..you will not kill him!
- Saruman: [Speaking through Théoden] Rohan is mine!
- Gandalf the White: [Casts another spell] Begone! [Théoden lunges in anger, but Gandalf successfully casts Saruman's influence out. Slowly, he becomes himself again. Éowyn rushes to his side.]
- Éowyn: Uncle?
- Théoden: I..I recognize your face. Éowyn. Gandalf?
- Gandalf the White: Breathe the free air again, my friend.
- Théoden: [stands up from the throne] Dark have been my dreams of late. [looks at his hands]
- Gandalf the White: Your fingers would remember their old strength better..if they grasped your sword.
- [Gríma's treachery is revealed and he is thrown out of the hall]
- Gríma Wormtongue: [pleading as he crawls away] I've only ever served you, my lord!
- Théoden: [furious, advancing on Gríma with his sword in hand] Your leech-craft would have had me crawling on all fours like a beast!
- Gríma Wormtongue: [pleading] Send me not from your sight! [Théoden raises his sword to kill when Aragorn intervenes]
- Aragorn: No, my lord! No, my lord. Let him go. Enough blood has been spilled on his account. [Aragorn offers his hand to Gríma, who spits on it in insult]
- Gríma Wormtongue: [pushing his way through the crowd] Get out of my way!
- Háma: Hail, Théoden King!
- [The people of Rohan bow before Théoden, who looks around him anxiously]
- Théoden: Where is Théodred? Where is my son?
- Théoden: [holding a flower in front of Théodred's tomb] Simbelmynë. Ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebears. Now it shall cover the grave of my son. Alas that these evil days should be mine. The young perish, and the old linger. That I should live to see the last days of my house.
- Gandalf the White: Théodred's death was not of your making.
- Théoden: No parent should have to bury their child. [begins to sob]
- Gandalf the White: He was strong in life. His spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers.
- Samwise Gamgee: [to Gollum] Hey, Stinker! Don't go getting too far ahead.
- Frodo Baggins: Why do you do that?
- Samwise Gamgee: What?
- Frodo Baggins: Call him names, run him down all the time.
- Samwise Gamgee: Because.. because that's what he is, Mr. Frodo. There's naught left in him but lies and deceit. It's the Ring he wants; it's all he cares about.
- Frodo Baggins: You have no idea what it did to him. What it's still doing to him! I want to help him, Sam.
- Samwise Gamgee: Why?
- Frodo Baggins: Because I have to believe he can come back.
- Samwise Gamgee: You can't save him, Mr. Frodo.
- Frodo Baggins: [angrily] What do you know about it?! Nothing! [instantly remorseful] I'm sorry, Sam. I don't know why I said that.
- Samwise Gamgee: I do. It's the Ring. You can't take your eyes off it. I've seen you. You're not eating; you barely sleep. It's taken hold of you, Mr. Frodo. You have to fight it!
- Frodo Baggins: [angry again] I know what I have to do, Sam. The Ring was entrusted to me! It's my task! Mine! My own!
- Samwise Gamgee: Can't you hear yourself? Don't you know who you sound like?
- Gollum: We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious. They stole it from us. Sneaky little hobbitses! Wicked, tricksy, false!
[he talks to himself, as if switching personalities]
- Sméagol: No. Not Master.
- Gollum: Yes, precious. False! They will cheat you, hurt you. Lie!
- Sméagol: Master's my friend!
- Gollum: You don't have any friends! Nobody likes you!
- Sméagol: Not listening.. I'm not listening..
- Gollum: You're a liar. And a thief.
- Sméagol: No.
- Gollum: [with relish]Murderer!
- Sméagol: [miserable] Go away.
- Gollum: 'Go away?' [laughs cruelly]
- Sméagol: [begins to cry] I hate you. I hate you!
- Gollum: Where would you be without me?! Gollum! Gollum!I saved us! It was me. We survived because of me!
- Sméagol: [stops crying] Not anymore.
- Gollum: [puzzled] What did you say?
- Sméagol: Master looks after us now. We don't need you.
- Gollum: What?
- Sméagol: Leave now, and never come back.
- Gollum: [hisses] No!
- Sméagol: Leave now, and never come back![Gollum snarls]LEAVE NOW, AND NEVER COME BACK![Gollum is silent, Sméagol looks around, delighted] We.. we told him to go away. And away he goes, Precious! [dances gleefully] Gone, gone, gone! Sméagol is free!
- [Sam is cooking rabbit stew]
- Sméagol: [wails miserably] What's it doing?! Stupid, fat hobbit! You ruins it!
- Samwise Gamgee: What's to ruin? There's hardly any meat on them. What we need is a few good taters.
- Sméagol: What's 'taters', precious? What's 'taters', eh?
- Samwise Gamgee: Po-ta-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick 'em in a stew. Lovely big golden chips with a nice piece of fried fish. [Sméagol spits in disgust] Even you couldn't say no to that.
- Sméagol: Oh yes, we could! Spoiling nice fish! Give it to us raw, and wriggling! You keep nasty chips!
- Samwise Gamgee: You're hopeless.
The enemy? His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is. Where he came from. If he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home? And he'd not rather had stayed there, at peace. War will make corpses of us all.
- [Frodo and Sam have just been captured by Faramir and his Ithilien Rangers]
- Samwise Gamgee: Wait! We're innocent travelers!
- Faramir: There are no travelers in these lands. Only servants of the Dark Tower. Or the White.
- Frodo Baggins: We are bound to an errand of secrecy. Those who claim to oppose the enemy would do well not to hinder us.
- Faramir: The enemy? [turns over the body of a fallen Haradrim soldier, shown to be a young Man] His sense of duty was no less than yours, I deem. You wonder what his name is. Where he came from. If he was really evil at heart. What lies or threats led him on this long march from home? And he'd not rather had stayed there, at peace. War will make corpses of us all.
- Gimli: [to Éowyn] It’s true you don't see many Dwarf women. In fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they're often mistaken for Dwarf men.
- Aragorn: [mouths words to Éowyn] It’s the beards.
- Gimli: This in turn has given raise to the belief that there are no women. And that Dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground! Which is of course ridiculous.
- Éowyn: My uncle told me a strange thing. He said that you rode to war with Thengel, my grandfather. But he must be mistaken.
- Aragorn: King Théoden has a good memory. He was only a small child at the time.
- Éowyn: Then you must be at least sixty. Seventy? But you cannot be eighty!
- Aragorn: Eighty-seven.
- Éowyn: You are one of the Dúnedain. A descendant of Númenor, blessed with long life. It was said that your race had passed into legend.
- Aragorn: There are few of us left. The Northern Kingdom was destroyed long ago.
- Elrond: [in Elvish] Arwen, it is time. The ships are leaving for Valinor. Go now before it is too late.
- Arwen: I have made my choice.
- Elrond: He is not coming back. Why do you linger here when there is no hope?
- Arwen: There is still hope.
- Elrond: If Aragorn survives this war, you will still be parted. If Sauron is defeated, and Aragorn made king and all that you hope for comes true, you will still have to taste the bitterness of mortality. Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you. No comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death, an image of the splendour of the kings of men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees, until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent. Arwen, there is nothing for you here.. only death. [in Elvish] Do I not also have your love?
- Arwen: [in Elvish, crying] You have my love, father.
- Faramir: What news?
- Madril: Our scouts report Saruman has attacked Rohan. Théoden's people have fled to Helm's Deep. But we must look to our own borders. Faramir, Orcs are on the move. Sauron is marshaling any army. Easterlings and Southrons are passing through the Black Gate.
- Faramir: How many?
- Madril: Some thousands. More come every day.
- Faramir: Who's covering the the river to the North?
- Madril: We pulled 500 men at Osgiliath. If the city is attacked, we won't hold it.
- Faramir: Saruman attacks from Isengard, Sauron from Mordor. The fight will come to Men on both fronts. Gondor is weak. Sauron will strike us soon. And he will strike hard. He knows now we do not have the strength to repel him.
- Faramir: My men tell me that you are Orc spies.
- Samwise Gamgee: Spies?! Now wait just a minute!
- Faramir: Well, if you're not spies, then who are you? Speak!
- Frodo Baggins: We are Hobbits of the Shire. Frodo Baggins is my name and this is Samwise Gamgee.
- Faramir: Your bodyguard?
- Samwise Gamgee: His gardener.
- Faramir: And where is your skulking friend? That gangrel creature. He had an ill-favoured look.
- Frodo Baggins: [reluctant] There was no other. We set out from Rivendell with seven companions. One we lost in Moria. Two were my kin. A Dwarf there was also, and an Elf, and two Men: Aragorn, son of Arathorn, and Boromir of Gondor.
- Faramir: [solemn] You are a friend of Boromir?
- Frodo Baggins: Yes, for my part.
- Faramir: It would grieve you, then, to learn that he is dead.
- Frodo Baggins: [shocked] Dead?! How? When?
- Faramir: As one of his companions, I had hope you would tell me. He was my brother.
- Note: The line is ranked #85 in the American Film Institute's list of the top 100 movie quotations in American cinema.
- [Extended Edition only]
- Saruman: Gandalf the White. Gandalf the Fool! Does he seek to humble me with his newfound piety?
- Gríma Wormtongue: There were three who followed the wizard. An Elf, a Dwarf, and a Man.
- Saruman: [sniffs] You stink of horse. [Gríma walks away] The Man, was he from Gondor?
- Gríma Wormtongue: [Saruman regains Grima's attention] No, from the North. One of the Dúnedain Rangers, I thought he was. His cloth was poor. And yet, he bore a strange ring. Two serpents with emerald eyes, one devouring, the other one crowned with golden flowers.
- Saruman: The Ring of Barahir. So Gandalf Greyhame thinks he's found Isildur's heir? The lost king of Gondor? He is a fool. The line was broken years ago. It matters not. The World of Men shall fall. It will begin at Edoras.
- [Camera slowly zooms in at the drainhole at Helm's Deep]
- Gríma Wormtongue: Helm's Deep has one weakness. It's outer wall is solid rock, but for a small culvert on its base, which is little more than a drain.
- [Scene changes to Isengard, where Saruman is seen pouring gunpowder]
- Gríma: How? How can fire undo stone? What kind of device will bring down the wall?
- [Saruman holds Gríma's hand back, which has a candle]
- Saruman: If the wall is breached, Helm's Deep will fall.
- Gríma: Even if it is breached, it would take a number beyond reckoning, thousands to storm the keep.
- Saruman: Tens of thousands.
- Gríma: But, my lord, there is no such force.
- [Saruman walks Gríma outside as they are talking. At this point, Saruman reveals to Gríma the massive army of Uruk-Hai]
- Saruman: A new power is rising! Its victory is at hand! [the Uruks cheer] This night, the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan! March to Helm's Deep! Leave none alive! To war! There will be no dawn..for Men!
- Théoden: A great host, you say?
- Aragorn: All Isengard is emptied.
- Théoden: How many?
- Aragorn: Ten thousand strong at least.
- Théoden: [astonished] Ten thousand?
- Aragorn: It is an army bred for a single purpose: to destroy the World of Men. They will be here by nightfall.
- Théoden: Let them come.
Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread. If this is to be our end then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.
- Théoden: They will break upon this fortress like water on rock. Saruman's hordes will pillage and burn, we've seen it before. Crops can be resown. Homes rebuilt. Within these walls we will outlast them.
- Aragorn: They do not come to destroy Rohan’s crops or villages; they come to destroy its people. Down to the last child.
- Théoden: [whispered] What would you have me do? Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread. If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.
- Aragorn: Send out riders, my lord, you must call for aid.
- Théoden: And who will come? Elves? Dwarfs? We are not so lucky in our friends as you. The old alliances are dead.
- Aragorn: Gondor will answer.
- Théoden: [angrily]Gondor?! Where was Gondor when the Westfold fell?! Where was Gondor when our enemies closed in around us?! Where was Gon-? [suddenly regains hold of himself] No, my lord Aragorn. We are alone.
- Aragorn: Farmers, ferriers, stable boys. These are no soldiers.
- Gimli: Most have seen too many winters.
- Legolas: Or too few. Look at them. They're frightened. You can see it in their eyes. [in Elvish] And they should be. Three hundred.. against ten thousand!
- Aragorn: [in Elvish] They have more hope of defending themselves here than at Edoras.
- Legolas: [in Elvish] Aragorn. They cannot win this fight. They are all going to die!
- Aragorn: [in common tongue] Then I shall die as one of them!
- Gamling: Every villager able to wield a sword has been sent to the armory. [Théoden does not respond] My lord?
- Théoden: Who am I, Gamling?
- Gamling: You are our king, sire.
- Théoden: And do you trust your king?
- Gamling: Your men, my lord, will follow you to whatever end.
- Théoden: To whatever end. Where is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? They have passed like rain on the mountains. Like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West, behind the hills, into Shadow. How did it come to this?
- Treebeard: We have just agreed.. [falls asleep]
- Merry Brandybuck: Yes?
- Treebeard: [wakes up] I have told your names to the Entmoot and we have agreed.. you are not Orcs. [smiles]
- Pippin Took: Well, that’s good news.
- Merry Brandybuck: What about Saruman? Have you come to a decision about him?
- Treebeard: Now, don't be hasty, master Meriadoc..
- Merry Brandybuck: Hasty? Our friends are out there! They need our help! They cannot fight this war on their own!
- Treebeard: War, yes. It affects us all, tree, root and twig. But you must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.
- Gimli: Well, lad, whatever luck you live by, let's hope it lasts the night.
- Legolas: Your friends are with you, Aragorn.
- Gimli: Let's hope they last the night.
- Gimli: [struggling to see over the wall] What's happening out there?
- Legolas: Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?
- [Gimli is silent for a moment, then laughs]
- Gimli: [kills two Uruk-Hai warriors] Legolas! Two already!
- Legolas: I'm on seventeen!
- Gimli: Huh? I'll have no pointy-ear outscoring me! [kills another one]
- Legolas: [shoots two more] Nineteen!
- Gimli: Oh, come on! We can take 'em!
- Aragorn: It's a long way.
- Gimli: [reluctantly] Toss me.
- Aragorn: What?
- Gimli: I cannot jump the distance, you'll have to toss me! [Aragorn nods] Don't tell the Elf.
- Aragorn: Not a word.
- Treebeard: The Ents cannot hold back this storm. We must weather such things as we have always always done.
- Merry Brandybuck: How can that be your decision?!
- Treebeard: This is not our war.
- Merry Brandybuck: But you're part of this world! Aren't you? You must help! Please! You must do something.
- Treebeard: You are young and brave, Master Merry. But your part in this tale is over. Go back to your home.
- Pippin Took: Maybe Treebeard's right. We don't belong here, Merry. It's too big for us. What can we do in the end? We've got the Shire. Maybe we should go home.
- Merry Brandybuck: The fires of Isengard will spread. And the woods of Tuckborough and Buckland will burn. And all that was once green and good in this world will be gone. There won't be a Shire, Pippin.
- [Having gone south at Pippin's request, Treebeard sees the devastation of Fangorn]
- Treebeard: [horrified] Many of these trees were my friends. Creatures I had known from nut and acorn.
- Pippin: I'm sorry, Treebeard.
- Treebeard: They had voices of their own.. [angrily as he looks at Isengard] Saruman.. A wizard should know better! [he lets out a howl of rage that echoes across the forest] There is no curse in Elvish, Entish or the tongues of Men for this treachery!
- Pippin: Look, the trees! They're moving!
- Merry: Where are they going?
- Treebeard: They have business with the Orcs. My business is with Isengard tonight, with rock and stone! [More Ents emerge from the forest]
- Merry: Yes..!
- Treebeard: Come, my friends. The Ents are going to war. It is likely that we go to our doom..the Last March of the Ents!
- [Treebeard and hundreds of Ents march towards Isengard]
- Théoden: The fortress is taken. It is over.
- Aragorn: You said this fortress would never fall while your men defend it! They still defend it! They have died defending it! [to Gamling] Is there no other way for the women and children to get out of the caves? Is there no other way?!
- Gamling: There is one passage, it leads into the mountains. But they will not get far, the Uruk-Hai are too many!
- Aragorn: Send word for the women and children to make for the mountain pass and barricade the entrance!
- Théoden: So much death.. what can Men do against such reckless hate?
- Aragorn: Ride out with me. Ride out and meet them.
- Théoden: For death and glory?
- Aragorn: For Rohan. For your people.
- Gimli: The sun is rising.. [Sunlight enters through a window, illuminating the room]
- Gandalf the White: [narration] 'Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East'.
- Théoden: Yes..yes! The Horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the Deep..one last time!
- Gimli: Yes!
- Théoden: [to Aragorn] Let this be the hour when we draw swords together! [to his men] Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin and the red dawn! [Gimli sounds the horn as the Uruks break down the doors]FORTH EORLINGAS! CHARGE!
- [after the Battle of Helm's Deep, Extended Edition only]
- Legolas: Final count: forty two.
- Gimli: [sitting on a dead Uruk with an ax embedded in its head, smoking a pipe] Forty two? Ooh! That's not bad for a pointy-eared Elvish princeling. I myself am sitting pretty on forty three.
- [Legolas suddenly shoots an arrow into the dead Uruk]
- Legolas: Forty three.
- Gimli: He was already dead.
- Legolas: He was twitching.
- Gimli: He was twitching because he's got my ax embedded in his nervous system!
- [he jiggles the ax, the Uruk spasms lifelessly]
- [Frodo attacks Sam with his sword]
- Samwise Gamgee: It's me. It's your Sam. Don't you know your Sam?
- [Frodo snaps out of the spell, horrified, and drops his sword]
- Frodo Baggins: I can't do this, Sam.
- Samwise Gamgee: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. [watching the Nazgûl flying away] It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo; the ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end.. because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was, when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
- Frodo Baggins: What are we holding on to, Sam?
- Samwise Gamgee: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for.
- Samwise Gamgee: I wonder if we'll ever be put into songs or tales.
- Frodo Baggins: What?
- Samwise Gamgee: I wonder if people will ever say, 'Let's hear about Frodo and the Ring,' and they'll say, 'Yes, that's one of my favorite stories.' 'Frodo was really courageous, wasn't he, Dad?' 'Yes, my boy. The most famousest of Hobbits. And that's saying a lot.'
- Frodo Baggins: You left out one of the chief characters: Samwise the Brave. I want to hear more about Sam. [Frodo stops walking and turns around to face Sam] Frodo wouldn't have got far without Sam.
- Samwise Gamgee: Now Mr. Frodo, you shouldn't make fun. I was being serious.
- Frodo Baggins: [smiling] So was I. [walks ahead]
- Samwise Gamgee: [to himself] 'Samwise the Brave'.
- [last lines]
- Sméagol: Master.. Master looks after us. Master wouldn't hurt us.
- Gollum: Master broke his promise!
- Sméagol: Don't ask Sméagol. Poor, poor Sméagol..
- Gollum: Master betrayed us! Wicked, tricksy, false. We ought to wring his filthy little neck. Kill him! Kill him! Kill them both! And then we takes the precious.. and we be the master!
- Sméagol: The fat hobbit, he knows. Eyes always watching.
- Gollum: Then we stabs them out! Put out his eyeses! Make him crawl!
- Sméagol: Yes! Yes! Yes!
- Gollum: Kill them both.
- Sméagol: Yes! No, no! It's too risky, it's too risky.
- Gollum: [sly] We could let her do it.
- Sméagol: Yes.. she could do it!
- Gollum: Yes, precious, she could. And then we takes it once they're dead.
- Sméagol: Once they’re dead..
- Gollum: Shhhh..
- Sméagol: [to Frodo and Sam] Come on, hobbits. Long ways to go yet. Sméagol will show you the way.
- Gollum: [sinisterly] Follow me.

- Sméagol: And me! MTV's my friend! My friend!

The Immortal Hero
Chapter 9
Tegalad sat as far away from life as he could. He had arrived at Helms Deep cradled by Legolas a few hours earlier and left alone in a bed roll. That had been successful until he was left alone and he Fire Jumped to the tallest tower he had seen and remained hidden. If people were looking for him, he was unaware of it.
He had discovered that the tower he sat on was attached to a giant horn that ended in the gorge one hundred metres below him. It provided a great view of the land and anyone who came close could be seen with plenty of time to be identified. The fields were brown and muddied, a field useless for planting and only good for fighting on.
Hedwig watched over him, providing him with comfort he was unwilling to ask for despite how much he needed it. Men had passed by underneath his hideaway, no one looking up. There was an extra metre of rock above the mouth-piece of the horn he had climbed to stay hidden and then a roof to keep the rain away and the small gap dry.
Tegalad lay on his side, completely still with his eyes wide open, staring at nothing and just replaying Shadow's death in his mind over and over and over again. Hedwig was concerned but knew that the only human who would be able to offer Tegalad comfort was gone. The elfling hadn't spoken a word or made a sound since sitting beside Shadow's body. His skin was sickly pale and he was shivering as the cold of night descended upon Helms Deep.
The sun sunk below the horizon slowly, its warmth clinging to the land as it disappeared. Tegalad didn't feel the cold as the sun disappeared becaause hot air had surrounded him to ward off the chill, yet still he shivered from shock.
He didn't move the entire night, the air itself keeping him alive. Hedwig stayed by his side, a silent sentinel and a comforting presence. The two remained on top of the horn until the sky started to lighten and sounds of movement increased beneath them. Tegalad focused his eyes on the horizon, squinting slightly as the morning rays of the sun hit his sensitive eyes. He uncurled with a moan as he moved muscles he hadn't moved in twelve hours. Hedwig shifted her wings and hobbled forward so she could perch on his arm and nuzzle his chin.
Tegalad didn't smile at her but he did rest his other hand on her head in acceptance of her comfort. He crawled forward awkwardly to peer across the horizon. He was hungry as he hadn't eaten since lunch the day before, nor had he slept for more than ten minutes at a stretch. He had black bags under his eyes indicating his lack of rest and his green eyes were dull and lifeless.
Figuring that he could get something to eat, as small as it probably would be, Tegalad slid out of his hiding spot and dropped onto the rocks below. He crouched on all fours before slowly making his way down unseen to where the provisions were kept. He hid several times as guards walked passed him and once he held his breath as he saw Boromir walking around the upper levels. He wasn't seen once and was able to acquire some pieces of bread he would eat after he Fire Jumped back to the Horn Tower.
His clothes were torn and dirty with blood, dirt and ashes from the fight the day before, but he didn't notice. He had a few small cuts from the fight he had realised he had, or when he had gotten them. Tegalad stared at them without much interest, running his fingers lightly over the scars and staring into the distance.
The sun rose higher, shadows grew smaller, and Tegalad remained alone. He had no idea of the panic he had created with his disappearance, nor the amount of people who were still looking for him. As time past and he wasn't found the members of the Fellowship began to despair. To lose him so soon after losing both Shadow and Aragorn was a blow to their hearts.
Gimli had searched the caves numerous times, walking up and down passageways, looking under every rock and in every alcove. He had no luck. Boromir walked through the living areas of Helms Deep. In every room, under every bed and in every cupboard he looked but there was no trace of the child. Legolas walked the fields and up on the battlements. There were no tracks he could follow to lead him to where their little charge was. King Théoden even had his guards out looking for the child. He had seen how lost Tegalad had looked as they rode back to Helms Deep and his paternal instincts were screaming at him to find him.
By midday there could be seen a lot of disheartened faces.
It was also around midday that a guard announced the presence of an oncoming rider. Soldiers lined up along the battlements, weapons ready, but it was with joy that they lowered their weapons and opened the gates to allow the rider to enter. People gathered around the rider and word was quickly spread that Lord Aragorn had returned from the dead.
While Aragorn was taken to see the King, Tegalad climbed down from his hideaway. He had seen the rider approach and the wind had brought the rumors up to him. He slipped into the shadows and moved stealthily down again, Hedwig on his shoulder. At the bottom of the steps he sent her to sit on the battlements and wait for him while he went to hide in the shadows outside of the King's counsel room.
There was only one door into the counsel room, and it was shut at the moment but it was only a matter of time until it opened and whoever was inside would exit. He settled down, invisible to those just passing by, and stared relentlessly at the door. His stare was so focused that he was startled when the doors actually opened and five people exited.
The King walked in front of the other four, though a man Tegalad was sure was dead was just slightly behind him. Boromir, Legolas and Gimli were just behind them, but Boromir was looking around hopefully and a little desperately. It was as he looked up at the battlements that he gasped, drawing the attention of the others.
'What is it?' Gimli asked following the other's gaze. He gasped himself. 'Is that Hedwig?'
'My God,' Théoden breathed having spotted the owl. 'He could still be here.'
'What?' the Man-Who-Should-Be-Dead asked. He looked up at Hedwig. 'Where's Tegalad? Shouldn't he be with one of you?'
'Tegalad pulled a disappearing act yesterday after we arrived,' Legolas explained.
'Why? Because of me?'
'Partially,' Gimli said as he rubbed his head. 'Tegalad and Shadow were ahead of the group yesterday and didn't notice the scout. They ran into the main body. Shadow broke his leg I think, Legolas saw it. Tegalad did his disappearing thing with the flames and we didn't know where he went.'
'He ended up under a rock overhanging, a couple of metres from where you went over the cliff,' Boromir continued. 'He fought back against the orcs that spotted him and it was only as he blew on his horn that I noticed where he was…surrounded by four orcs. I didn't get there in time but I remember his scream as one orc struck Shadow. Shadow died not that long after.'
'Oh my…' Aragorn, for it couldn't be anyone else, breathed. 'Do we know where he could be?'
'We know where he's not,' Théoden explained. 'We've been searching for him all night and all of this morning. There's been no sign of him. It's only just now that we've even seen Hedwig.'
Aragorn lifted his arm for Hedwig to land and after a moment the bird lifted up off her perch to glide down towards where the group had stopped walking. Except that she didn't land on Aragorn's arm, she landed on Tegalad's. The group turned around to follow the owl's path and were silent as they saw Tegalad step out of the shadows, Hedwig perched on his arm.
The elfling had his hood down, showing everyone how well he was coping with Shadow, and Aragorn's, death..badly. His face was expressionless as he stared at the four members of the Fellowship and the King, but when he reached Aragorn's face, a flicker of emotion could be seen. Aragorn walked forward a few steps before he sunk to the ground, his arms slightly open. Tegalad looked at Hedwig briefly and the owl flew up into the sky. As she moved, Tegalad rushed forward and fell into Aragorn's open arms.
Aragorn lifted him off the ground easily, his expression concerned, but Tegalad had hidden his face against Aragorn's neck and didn't see it.
The group continued walking up to the battlements, all of them concerned about Tegalad but now able to focus on what Aragorn had told them. They were examining the defences and Théoden was concentrating on the amount of soldiers he had available to him. All throughout their conversations Aragorn kept his hand on Tegalad's back and rubbed it soothingly. Tegalad was feeling drowsy and his eyes kept drooping, only to shoot back open.
'Go to sleep Little One,' Aragorn whispered after noticing how the child was forcing himself to stay awake. 'I won't let anything bad happen to you.'
'Don't leave me again,' Tegalad whispered almost inaudibly.
'Never,' Aragorn promised. Tegalad allowed his eyes to droop shut and his body to regain the energy it had used up the day before.
Tegalad woke up in a stranger's arms underground. He shot up and looked around wildly, looking for a familiar face anywhere. He couldn't even spot Hedwig anywhere nearby. He pushed away from the arms holding him, feeling a little betrayed, and looked around.
He was underground in some kind of large cave. Everywhere he looked were women and children, most children being cuddled by their mothers or comforting smaller children around them. There was a stone door not far from where he was sitting but it was clearly sealed shut and wouldn't open for a while.
Tegalad looked at the woman who was holding him and looked down just as quickly. She was staring at him in sympathy and a little amazement. He lifted his hand and felt for his ears, brushing his hair across them self-consciously. Sitting next to her was a little girl pressed against her side. Tegalad looked at her closely and noticed that it was Freda. He looked around quickly as he tried to spot Éothain but couldn't see him anywhere.
'How are you feeling?' the woman asked him kindly. 'Lord Aragorn said that you would sleep for a while and would be hungry when you woke. Are you hungry?'
Tegalad nodded without speaking. He wanted Aragorn there, or someone familiar, but from the people he could see in the caves, or the lack of men, he guessed that everyone was preparing for battle. The woman handed over some cooked meat that was a little cold, but it was more sustenance than he'd eaten in several days and he took it with a grateful nod.
Freda moved away from her mother and pressed herself against Tegalad's side. Tegalad stiffened but put an arm around her in a one-armed hug. Freda looked up at him with a soft smile and lifted one of her hands to touch his ear gently.
'You have pretty ears,' she said simple as he stiffened again. 'Are you an elf?'
Tegalad nodded stiffly without speaking. He placed some meat in his mouth and slowly chewed it. His mind flashbacked to when Shadow died and he put the rest of the meat down. He didn't think he could stomach anymore. Instead he nibbled on the bread and an apple that the woman gave him.
'This is Mama,' Freda said with a bright smile. 'She was waiting here for us, just like you said. Éothain would be here with us but the King said that anyone who can hold a sword should be out there protecting us. I hope he's alright.'
Tegalad tightened his grip on her shoulder and leant down to whisper in her ear.
'Éothain will be safe,' he said. 'You see him tomorrow.'
Freda smiled brightly at him and was about to speak again when the earth around them started to move. Freda let out a startled gasp as several young children started to cry. Freda's mother pulled the two of them into a hug, ignoring Tegalad's stiffness, and looked up to the roof.
'It's begun,' she whispered. Tegalad followed her gaze to the ceiling, listening to the sounds the rocks made. It didn't sound like fighting to him, more like marching. It was very nerve-racking, sitting still and letting others do the fighting instead. He knew that it was what he wanted when he arrived in Middle-Earth, but now that the time had come for that to happen, he wanted nothing more than to be out there, making a difference and protecting his friends.
For the next hour Tegalad sat still with his arms around Freda who was shaking in fear. The sounds of fighting had increased but nothing had sounded too close. That was until an explosion rocked the cave. Screams erupted around them and Tegalad looked up at the walls where dust was falling. A woman screamed out that the enemy was breaking in, creating more panic in the caves. Tegalad shook his head sadly. He wondered if there was anyone standing outside the doors to protect them, but figured that every able man would be out fighting, not standing guard.
He started to fidget, he needed to know what was happening. He looked at Freda who clung to him and gently pried her fingers out of his clothes. With much prodding he managed to get her to latch on to her mother and slip out of both of their clutches. Freda's mother looked at him in horror, as if she knew what he was going to do, and tried to pull him back towards her.
'I can help,' he said simply before he Fire Jumped to his hideaway. His last glance was of Freda crying out to him and trying to reach him before he was greeted with the sight of a blown apart wall and thousands upon thousands of orcs moving relentlessly towards them.
Taking quick stock of the situation, Tegalad decided that he'd focus on the ladders that were being raised. He solidified the air and pushed it against the ladders, sending them back onto the mass of black in the night. Their screams sent shivers down Tegalad's spine but he blocked them out to help out where he could.
He paused after a few minutes to regain his breath and see how many allies they had. He spotted a flash of blonde hair and thought it was Legolas. That was until he looked closer.
'Haldir?' he murmured surprised. He looked around and spotted several more elves from Lothlorien joining in the battle against the orcs. He figured that this was what Vanya had implied in her letter and made a promise to himself to get someone to help him write back to the elf woman after the battle was over. He watched Haldir fight for a few minutes, vaguely noticing the positioning of the other allied fighters. He saw Aragorn on the fields and the wind brought up his cry of 'Retreat!' to where he was perched. He didn't see Haldir's reply, but he did see the orc sneak up on the blonde elf with its sword raised.
'No!' Tegalad cried in despair as he Fire Jumped to Haldir, grabbed the elf and Fire Jumped back again. He sat on the ground heavily, panting as if he'd run a marathon in a short amount of time. He stared at Haldir who was looking around in alarm, sword raised, before the elf looked down and immediately dropped to his knees.
'Tegalad,' the elf said in horror. 'What are you doing here? You should be in the caves, safe.'
'You would've died if I hadn't,' Tegalad whispered. 'I can't lose you too. And Vanya would have been devastated if you didn't return. You can't die.'
'Death is a part of life Little One,' Haldir murmured and was surprised when Tegalad jumped up in anger.
'Stop saying that! Everyone says that! It doesn't make it alright!'
With a glare Tegalad spun around and leapt up onto the wall to look down at the swirling armies. He noticed that the orcs were massing around the front gate, trying to break it down with a battering ram. He pushed a strong wind against them to make them lose their balance and was satisfied to see that a handful of orcs were knocked off. Haldir appeared at his side and watched as a mysterious wind upset the enemy.
'I need to go back and help them,' Haldir said softly. 'How do I get back?'
Tegalad looked at him and reluctantly took his arm in preparation to Fire Jump, but was instead pulled into a hug, his small body crushed against the bloodied armor of the elf.
'Thank you for saving me Tegalad, I will be forever grateful to you.'
Tegalad nodded and Fire Jumped to Aragorn's side, surprising the man with their appearance. Tegalad looked at him emotionlessly and slipped out of Haldir's grasp. He didn't say a word to anyone present and returned to his position above the battle.
For the next few hours he distracted the orcs and even tapped into his fire elemental control and set fire to the ropes pulling the ladders up. There was a light rain, more of a drizzle and he knew that it had been raining heavily at the start of the night. He was more than glad that his vantage point was covered, protecting him from the water and hiding his position from enemy and ally alike.
The battle started to slow down near sunrise. The orcs had swamped the fortress not that long before, driving any of the survivors indoors. Tegalad knew that Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas and Gimli were still alive as he had watched all four of them enter the counsel room. Haldir was also alive, having followed them all in shortly after.
Tegalad was exhausted. He hadn't used his elemental abilities for such a long time before without resting in between. Even then the battle he'd been fighting in hadn't lasted this long or had that many enemies. His hands were shaking uncontrollably and his breath was short. He needed a really long rest once the battle was over and done with.
While he was resting his head he looked towards the rising sun, wishing for the end of the nightmare below him. It took him several minutes of looking at the sun, and the lightening land in front of it, before he noticed what it was he was seeing. He rubbed his eyes in disbelief but when the view didn't change he smiled for the first time in what felt like ages.
Look to my coming, at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east.
Riding towards them at full speed was the Rohirrim in all its glory, led by a white robed man on a white horse. The sheet number of reinforcements now available to them would crush the remaining orcs who had made their way into the fortress or were still in the field.
Hurried footsteps up the stairs caused Tegalad to whip around in alarm, only to realise that it was Gimli standing before him. The dwarf looked just as shocked to see him and seemed to forget the reason he was at the top of the tower. Tegalad pointed to the eastern horizon with a smile.
All the mods 3 power generation. All the Mods started out as a private pack for just a few friends of mine that turned into something others wanted to play! It has all the basics that most other 'big.
'Gandalf comes,' he said simply. Gimli looked to where he was pointing and cried out in joy. With a startled jump the dwarf seemed to remember why he was there and rushed towards the mouthpiece of the giant horn. With a great breath Gimli sounded the horn, its sound echoing across the field as the gates to Helms Deep burst outwards and a group of riders attacked the oncoming orcs with renewed determination.
As the sun rose over the hills, revealing Gandalf and the Rohirrim in all their glory, the orcs seemed to hesitate. The rising sun blinded them as the horses galloped down the steep hill and their riders swept them aside with their blades and their fresh energy. The long battle then came to an end.
As the riders chased the retreating orcs, the battle weary soldiers cheered their victory. Tegalad slumped against the stone wall, completely and utterly exhausted. Strong arms wrapped around him and he leant back against Gimli, eyes closing tiredly. Gimli shook him worriedly.
'I alright,' he whispered. 'Tired.'
'I know laddy,' Gimli said. 'But we have to get down there. Aragorn was mighty shocked when you showed up with Haldir. Completely worried when you disappeared again though. Never thought you'd be up here.'
Tegalad smirked sleepily and groaned when he was lifted from the ground. Gimli grumbled about his slight weight, mumbling something of making himself in charge of his meals. Tegalad allowed him to mumble on, he had no energy to do anything else.
Some time later, just as he was about to fall asleep, another set of arms wrapped around him, lifting him higher into the air. Tegalad forced his eyes open and stared at Aragorn sleepily. With a soft smile he allowed his body to go limp as he passed out on the man's shoulder.
I'm not particaularly happy with this chapter as it's so short, the next one is only a little longer, but I hope it's alright. Leave me a review and I'll post again tomorrow.

~ Theoden, before leading a cavalry charge at Helm's Deep |
Theoden, son of Thengel was the King of Rohan towards the end of the Third Age; during the War of the Ring and one of the many heroes in J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and Peter Jackson's films of the same name respectively.
Helms Deep Horn Sounds
He was the uncle of Eomer and Eowyn and the father of Theodred. During the war, he was brainwashed by Saruman the White and under the control, he unintentionally allowed orcs to roam the plains of Rohan and kill and destroy in their path. Saruman appointed Grima Wormtongue, Theoden's trusted servant to speak for Theoden. He was saved by Gandalf and offered his allegiance with the Fellowship in the war. He lost his son Theodred in battle and banished Eomer. Determined to save his people from Saruman, he retreats to Helm's Deep where one of the major battles of the war would occur. After the victory at Helm's Deep and the death of Saruman, Theoden reluctantly rode to Minas Tirith to aid Gondor in the Battle of Pelennor Fields against Mordor. He was attacked on the battlefield by the Witch-King of Angmar and almost slain but was rescued by Eowyn who slew the Ringwraith. He thanked his niece and died from his wounds. Theoden appeared in The Two Towers & The Return of the King and was portrayed by Bernard Hill.
The Two Towers (film)
In the film, Sauron appointed Saruman to destroy Rohan to gain control of the region north of Gondor. He controlled Theoden with his magic and appointed Grima Wormtongue to speak in Theoden's aid. During 'Saruman's' rule, orcs, Uruk-Hai, and wild men banished by Rohan ambushed villages and killed innocent women and children. During one battle, Eomer, found Theoden's son Theodred, barely alive and brought him back to Edoras. Eomer told Theoden but he just stood there silent and look aged and deformed from Saruman's magic. Eomer assured him that Saruman was behind everything but Wormtongue quickly rebuffs him saying Saruman is an ally and under a false decision from the king, he banished Eomer and his men, 2000 soldiers from Rohan.
A few days later, Eomer ran into Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli and told them of Theoden's condition and to be careful. The trio found Gandalf, reincarnated and now a white wizard and explained to him and he decides to ride to Edoras and rescue Theoden. When they arrive, Theoden's guards had them surrender their weapons but Gandalf convinced them to let him keep his staff. Wormtongue told Theoden (really Saruman), that Gandalf returned. Aragorn and the others held off Wormtongue and the guards and Gandalf began breaking the spell. Theoden laughed that Gandalf could not break the spell but Gandalf, revealing himself as the White performs an exorcism on Theoden which was working. Through Theoden, Saruman told him he will kill Theoden and Rohan will soon belong to him but Gandalf broke the spell which injured Saruman. Free from the spell, Eowyn goes to him and Theoden returns to his normal self. He thanks Gandalf and grasps his sword and sternly stares at Wormtongue. Theoden threw Wormtongue out of the palace and attempted to slain him but was stopped by Aragorn. He was asked where Theodred was and a funeral was held for his son.
After the funeral, Theoden and Gandalf stay by Theodred's grave and Theoden weeps as he feels responsible for his death. Gandalf assures him that Theoden was not responsible and that his son will go to the great beyond and join their ancestors. As refugees arrive to Edoras, they tell him of Saruman's destruction to which Gandalf tells him to rebel and fight. Aragorn suggests bringing Eomer back but Theoden believed that it was too late to bring Eomer and decided to empty Edoras and bring all refugees and soldiers to Helm's Deep. Gandalf told Aragorn and the others to aid Theoden if war should come and he rides off to find Eomer. As they were traveling, Theoden tells Aragorn about Eowyn; about how she lost her parents and that he should've been closer to her. Before arriving to Helm's Deep, they were intercepted by Saruman's warg riders. Theoden led a cavalry charge and dispatched Eowyn to lead the refugees to Helm's Deep. Theoden was victorious but lost many men, including Aragorn, who could not be found. He tells his men to leave the dead which upsets Legolas.
Aragorn survived and arrived at Helms Deep days later to warn Theoden that Saruman had unleashed 10,000 Uruk-Hai and will be arriving by nightfall. Theoden allows them to come and starts defending the fortress. Gimli tells him that the uruks are more powerful and smarter than regular orcs but refuses to listen. Aragorn demands him to call for aid but Theoden assures him the old alliances are dead and that elves and dwarves would never help and neither would Gondor whom Theoden has asked for help but Denethor had not responded. Before the battle, Theoden begins to lose hope, but his comrade Gamling reminds him of being a king. Soon after, hundreds of Elves, led by Haldir and sent by Elrond arrive to aid Theoden in the battle. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli lead the Elves on the wall while Theoden views the battle from above. After hundreds of Uruks are cut down, Theoden assures that he'll win but then, the uruks breach the wall and the main gate. Theoden lead his men to the gate and hold off the uruks but one injures him. Aragorn and Gimli fight off the uruks on the causeway and Theoden tries the barricade the door again. This fails and he calls a retreat. The next morning, Theoden, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and a few Rohirrim are the only survivors and barricade themselves in the throne room. There, Theoden loses hope but Aragorn remembers Gandalf's return and tells Theoden to ride out and meet them. Theoden gladly accepts and leads a last stand cavalry charge. They trample countless uruks to reach outside and Gandalf arrives with Eomer and reinforcements and win the battle. Theoden then travels with the Fellowship to Isengard to confront Saruman. The Return of the King (film)
Theoden arrives at Isengard and demands Saruman to surrender. Saruman sarcastically asks for peace but Theoden says he'll give it to him when he is dead. Wormtongue appeared behind Saruman and Theoden tells him that he forgives him and to remember that he is a man of Rohan. Saruman tells Theoden that Wormtongue is his property and that victory at Helm's Deep does not belong to him and that he is Rohan's worst king. Theoden believes that he was right. Wormtongue then stabs Saruman and the wizard falls to his death. The Fellowship return to Edoras and Theoden holds a victory banquet. He gives a moment of silence for the lives of those lost and tells Eowyn that Aragorn is the true victor of Helm's Deep. The next morning, Gandalf tells Theoden that Sauron will be launching an assault on Minas Tirith and that Gondor will need Rohan's help. Theoden refuses as he does not wish to help those who did not help him. Many days later, Gandalf secretly lights the beacon of Gondor and when Rohan receives the signal, Aragorn begs Theoden to aid Gondor and he agrees. Theoden dispatches Eomer and Gamling to summon every man they can find and to rendez-vous at Dunharrow. Merry offers his service to Theoden and he gladly accepts it and he appoints him as esquire. Before riding out, Theoden believes that Gondor is where his fate will await him. When they arrive at Dunharrow, his men welcome him and learns that he has 6,000 riders to lead. Elrond arrives as well to give Aragorn the sword of Isildur and Aragorn and the others ride off into the night on a mission. Theoden's men believes that they are fleeing but Theoden assures them that they are not and will meet them on the battlefield. Theoden tells Merry that he cannot go to war with him but Merry sneaks in with Eowyn, disguised as a soldier and Theoden leads on to Gondor.
Three days later, the Rohirrim arrive at Pelennor Fields. Theoden gives a powerful speech and tells his men to fight to the death. He leads the charge (one of the greatest charges in cinema history), and they trample thousands of orcs who flee in terror. Theoden was close to victory but then, in the distance, the Haradrim arrive, atop their Mumakil, giant elephants. Theoden reforms the line and leads another charge but an unsuccessful one as the Mumakil trample the Rohirrim and crush thousands of them. Theoden becomes cornered by several orcs and Eowyn, still disguised jumps in to help her uncle. Then, the Witch-King of Angmar swoops down on his fell beast and grabs Theoden and his horse and hurls afar. Theoden becomes crushed by his horse and is broken in several places. The fell beast gets ready to feast on him but Eowyn steps in, decapitates the beast and engages in battle with the Witch-King. Both she and Merry slay the king, and Aragorn arrives with an army of ghosts and they win the battle. Injured, Eowyn crawls over to Theoden to save him. Theoden tells her that she already saved him from a terrible fate but she cannot save him from death. He makes peace with himself, accepting that he was a great king and that his spirit will be welcomed by kings of old and dies. Eowyn weeps over his body.Air Horn Sound Effects
In the film, that is the last of Theoden, the audience sees and hears of. In the books, after Sauron was defeated, a funeral was held for Theoden at Edoras and Eomer is declared king.
